When we decided to travel to Tunisia during half term, it was because we needed a break from daily life, a chance to focus on our work and develop our programmes in a different setting. But, as always, there’s a “but.”
As soon as we landed, we felt an instant sense of gratitude , grateful that we were only three hours away from home, yet so many miles away from our everyday routines. And then, that familiar urge to discover kicked in.
The people we met were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful, which made our stay both unique and authentic. Hammamet Centre is a beautiful coastal town that offers that perfect holiday feel while still maintaining a strong sense of local life. Most of the holidaymakers we met were Tunisians themselves, so it never felt like a purely tourist resort.
We stayed inside the Medina, in a charming boutique hotel full of character; the setting was perfect, steeped in history and character.
Of course, we couldn’t resist exploring a bit. With the help of our local partner, we gained incredible insight into Tunisia and its people, their warmth, resilience, and deep-rooted culture that make this country so special.
We visited places such as Sidi Bou Saïd, Zaghouan, and the Berber village of Zriba, as well as the capital, Tunis. We sipped countless cups of mint tea with pine nuts, snacked on tabouna, a traditional bread we bought from a local vendor on the side of the road and indulged in makroudh, yogurt, kaak warka, delicious seafood, and, of course, plenty of couscous.
If you are ever tempted to experience Tunisia for yourself, and you want to experience the way we did, we can help you make it happen: it will be unique, authentic, sometimes uncomfortable and safe. You just need to shout.
